What is a Gandalf magic everyone-shall-pass (through my labyrinth) staff?

It's a five or six foot PVC pipe, 1 inch in diameter (make sure you get the 1 inch pipe because the railroad chalk is 7/8 inch diameter).  Available at any hardware store BUT the staff's magical abilities are hidden from the normal world, like in a Harry Potter novel.  You go into the hardware store and ask to see  1" PVC SCH 40 Plain End White Pipe and he'll show you his stash.  Costs about 3 bucks.  Don't worry, the store attendant is in on it.  He'll recognize you immediately as a magic staff buyer.

Magic staffs are very personal items.  Make sure you try out several.  See how they feel in your hand.  Most will be just plain plastic pipe but one of them will be magic!

Eventually you'll feel the magic.  That is YOUR Gandalf magic everyone-shall-pass (through my labyrinth) staff!

You ARE looking for a staff here.  I'm 5 foot 10 inches tall and I use a 5 foot staff.  There is a reason for that; several actually.

1) It will save your back.  The longer the staff the less you bend over.  This gets better the older you get.  That's not common in life.

2) Perspective.  You'll be dragging the staff behind you when you draw, the longer the staff the more distance you have to the chalk so the easier it is to freehand draw nice even widths.  I took these pictures holding the staff with one hand while taking pictures with my cell phone in the other.  While drawing you can see the entire labyrinth as you draw too because you're not bent over staring straight down.  You're standing up seeing the big picture.  This will greatly help in getting even width paths.

3. Measuring.  As any woodsman will tell you, a staff lets you measure and estimate.  Trying to exactly bisect a line for a perfect cross?  Lay the big white staff across the line you want to bisect and get the chalk position just right.  Then draw.  Works like a champ.

Here is a labyrinth drawer showing perfect form :)
